MEAT:STACK

With NE1 and SouthernGreen in Newcastle

We were approached by NE1 in November 2020 to create a parklet - a temporary use for a parking space or loading bay - for local business MEAT:STACK. The parklet is a solution to a lack of internal seating space, which has been especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We worked in conjunction with SouthernGreen landscape architects to achieve a regenerative escape in the Bigg Market area of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Galvanised trough planters were an integral part of the design, and were filled with evergreen foliage to brighten and calm the space.

A structural steel frame was fabricated to exact measurements, taking into account the steep slope and camber of the road itself, and the additional need for a hinged drainage access panel and parasol framing. Millboard was laid to create a high-performance, low-maintenance deck and we used Thermowood to create the upright frame and horizontal shading screens, with inset powder-coated signage. The parklet was largely prefabricated in our workshop and installed overnight. Millboard fascia boards were added to the exposed steel frame in situ, and finishing touches such as butterfly bike stands, Thermowood plaque and galvanised troughs were added post-install.

Gabion planters were added to the North and South of the parklet to give extra shelter and shade, for which we created bespoke Thermowood covers; the gabions themselves were filled with Scottish cobbles. Special thanks to Alex at NE1, Liam at SouthernGreen and Tom at MEAT:STACK for their hard work and continued support throughout this build.
