New Kent Road Kiosks

With Turner.Works and Southwark Council at Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre in London

As part of the redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, we were contacted by Turner.Works and Southwark Council to produce two timber-clad kiosks for local vendors.

Starting life as two shipping containers, the kiosks required some remedial metalworks, including openings for roller shutters, refuse access and personnel doors. To meet planning regulations, the containers also had to be resized both in length and width to create bespoke sizes for a specific site on New Kent Road. Internally, we worked with the vendors to create suitable shelving and furniture provisions, as well as meeting their lighting and electricity requirements.

The kiosks were clad with finished plywood to create a vibrant gradient effect, and framed with purple softwood to highlight and complement the gradient. Aluminium signs were added to the softwood frame, and a green sedum roof was installed.

With great thanks to Tom and Carl at Turner.Works, Dan at Southwark Council, Ailsa at Gardiner and the full team at Transport for London who made this project possible.
